Since the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, it has swept across the world and has largely raised the concern about respiratory diseases. Most respiratory infections are caused by viruses. As the genetic material of many respiratory viruses is RNA, adenovirus, whose genetic material is DNA, is particularly special.
Human adenovirus (HAdV) is one of the common pathogens of human respiratory infections, and can cause a variety of diseases, including pneumonia, bronchitis, ocular conjunctivitis, gastrointestinal diseases and encephalitis. In recent years, outbreaks and deaths caused by mutation and recombination of adenovirus have increased, which has greatly affected public health safety and attracted huge attention from countries around the world.

In the detection of respiratory diseases, nucleic acid testing techniques are time-sensitive and have the highest positive rate compared to other testing methods. Thanks to the high sensitivity, lower respiratory tract infections can be detected through upper respiratory tract sampling, thus lessening the limitations of the detection. Also, nucleic acid testing is not non-specific and has the highest sensitivity compared to antigen and antibody testings.
